Here we go. Autumn's officially kick started in Euro waters, when Helene (who was downgraded from a hurricane to a post-tropical cyclone) ripped her way across the Atlantic delivering the opening session of the season to some sheltered spots across multiple countries.

Spots lit up all across Europe, France, the UK. And does it surprise that Portugal was perhaps the highlight? Two days of pumping surf at Supertubos and a few more...sheltered...spots got it so, so good.

Lensman Francisco Antunes relays to MSW said: “This was the first solid swell of the season in Portugal. Helene brought us to Supertubos, with perfect conditions all day yesterday and the day before.

“The session really started early with around 30 surfers in the water before sunrise. The level in the water was insane. Locals, Luis Perloiro and João Moreira were the stand outs.”

Helene began as a hurricane but was quickly downgraded as it made a rather unusual northwards track towards Ireland. And it would be a more remarkable occurrence, had Hurricane Ophelia not rifled along a similar trajectory this time last year.

Doesn't it look oh-so-inviting? Ignore the jagged reef it breaks off...

September is usually an active month for most Euro spots, as the gates to the swell season swing open. Last year, Nazare saw one of the best seasons in recent years, with Rodrigo Koxa shredding the largest wave of all time. Here's hoping for more colossal days at that behemoth.

Yeah, if you can weather the tide backing off, those overhead close outs got real good.

Power turns at Supertubos.
